The Big Bang has made idealists out of anybody who thinks. First
there was nothing, and then in less than a nanosecond the material
universe blew into existence. These early material processes were
apparently obeying mathematical laws that themselves, in some sense,
existed prior to the Big Bang, since they appear to be operative
from the very beginning. Of the two great and general philosophical
orientations that have always been available to thoughtful men and
women—namely, materialism and idealism—it appears that,
whatever else the Big Bang did, it dealt a lethal blow to materialism.
